Be a Part of the Solution

The Portland Police Department recognizes that police officers must work hand in hand with the community in order to solve crimes and maintain a safe city. Community members often have pieces of information that are key to solving or preventing a crime. At the same time, we understand that community members may, for varied reasons, prefer not to speak directly to the police regarding an issue.

Text a Tip

This program allows community members to text crime tips to the Portland Police Department completely anonymously.

How to Submit a Tip via Text Message:

Text the keyword “GOTCHA” and your tip to 274637 (CRIMES). You will immediately receive a response confirming receipt of your message. To submit additional information, just send a reply.

How it works:

Your tip is sent to a secure server in Canada where all of your identifying information is removed and a four digit code is assigned to you. *The Police Department has no way of identifying who you are.* The tip is then forwarded to the Portland Police Department and assigned to an investigator for follow-up. The investigator might text you back to get more information. If you don’t want the Police Department to communicate with you, send a text message with the word STOP to 274637 at any time.

Cost to Send a Tip:

Although the Portland Police Department is providing this service at no cost to users, standard messaging rates and other fees may apply depending on your mobile plan. Check with your carrier for details.

IF YOU NEED IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE, PLEASE CALL 911.
If you need routine police response or assistance, please call the Portland Police Department non-emergency line at 874-8575
