The Portland Police Department is pleased to announce that it has been selected after a competitive process as one of six national learning sites for the Specialized Policing Responses: Law Enforcement/Mental Health Learning Sites project by the offices of the Council of State Governments Justice Center and the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice.

The selection was announced after a representative from the DOJ recently conducted a site visit and reviewed the departmentís program and standard procedures for responding to calls for service related to mental health issues. Their decision was based on the collaborative efforts between the Departmentís mental health coordinator and Community Counseling Centerís Childrenís Initiative Program and the Trauma Intervention Program (TIP), the HOME Team; and Ingraham/Youth Alternativesí mental health liaison program, all of which allow law enforcement officers to better serve the mental health community.

The selection will allow the Portland Police Department to act as a consultant and offer technical assistance to jurisdictions around the country who seek to expand their law enforcement and mental health response.
