Police Department makes it easy to dispose of unwanted medications

What: Tomorrow, the City of Portlandís Police Department in partnership with the cityís Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Division will unveil a MedReturn Drug Collection Unit available to the public 24/7 for disposal of medication at the Portland Police Station. Members of the public can sort through their medicine cabinet and bring in expired drugs or medications no longer needed or used by the household.

The collection box provides a safe and easy way to dispose of medications and reduce the risks associated with leaving expired medications in the home as well as the environmental impact of disposing medications improperly by flushing them or throwing them in the trash. If not properly disposed of, these medications could be used illegally or cause accidental poisoning. Additionally, the cityís wastewater system is not designed to remove pharmaceuticals.

Medications should be brought in their original containers/packages if possible. Participation is free.
Durable medical equipment, thermometers, needles or liquid medications will not be accepted.
