FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 6, 2013
The Portland Police Department is alerting the public regarding a series of robberies that have occurred during the past month.
Between January 5, 2013, and February 5, 2013, there have been five purse snatching type robberies in the city. The two most recent incidents occurred on the evening of February 4, 2013 on Casco Street and a short time later in the 550 block of Congress Street. In all five incidents the suspect was described as an average-built, white male with collar- to shoulder-length brown hair, wearing dark clothing, and riding a dark-colored bicycle.
Victims reported the bicyclist appears to be riding out of control coming into contact with the victim, grabbing the victim’s purse and riding away. Several of the attempts were unsuccessful with the rider yelling back “sorry” in what investigators believe is an attempt to have the contact appear accidental.
All incidents occurred in close vicinity of each other. This area is between High and Temple Streets, Congress and Commercial Street. The time of these incidents occurred between 6:00PM and 10:00PM.
Anyone with information regarding these incidents--or who was a victim and did not report it--is asked to contact the Portland Police Department at 874-8533.
