Arson Arrest

Michael Irving, DOB: 09-29-67, of Portland was arrested and charged with Arson at approximately 1900 hours on October 8, 2012.

At approximately 1500 hours on October 8, 2012, Portland Police officers along with the Portland Fire Department responded to Irvingís residence at 9 Freeman Street for a report the building was on fire.

Officers first on the scene found heavy smoke emitting from the residence. Irving was standing in the door way of his apartment informing officers they were not needed. Irving was escorted from the apartment as firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire. The building is a duplex however no one was home in the other unit at the time of the fire. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The building sustained fire and heavy smoke damage. No estimate of damage is available at this time.

A preliminary investigation into the cause of the fire determined it to be suspicious, revealing a number of fire locations within the apartment, as well as evidence of an accelerant.

Irving was interviewed by investigators at the Portland Police Department and subsequently arrested.

This investigation is being conducted by the City of Portlandís Arson Investigation Team. The team is comprised of police and fire investigators specially trained to investigate suspicious fires in a collaborative effort.

Bail has been set a $50,000 dollars.

Arson is a Class A crime.
