Community Policing

Traffic Unit

Island Services

The Portland Police Department, in response to the success of the Community Policing effort over the past few years, created a complete unit dedicated to serving the needs of our citizens. This division consists of the Community Policing Unit, the Traffic Unit, and the Islands Services Unit. Within Community Policing, you will also find the Mounted Unit and our officers who work in the schools.

COMMUNITY POLICING

The Portland Police Department is committed to a community approach to policing our neighborhoods. This requires officers to become immersed in the neighborhoods they serve and become a resource for residents as well as law enforcement.

Aimed at identifying long-term problems that detract from the life of a neighborhood, community oriented policing draws on residents, property owners, and business people to develop creative long-term solutions. A key to the success of this venture is the work of the coordinators in each center.

We encourage all residents to visit their local center and get to know the men and women of the Portland Police Department working in their neighborhood.

There are five Community Policing Centers in operation at this time:

The Parkside Community Center at 94 Mellen St.
756-8137
Coordinator: Michelle Lauture

The Munjoy Hill Neighborhood Center at 101 Atlantic St.
756-8135
Coordinator: Janine Kaserman

The Mid-Town Center at 26 Portland St.
772-1371
Coordinator: Rebecca Smith

The West-End Community Policing Center at 251 Danforth St.
780-0495
Coordinator: Sarah Colton

The Portland Housing Center at 14 Baxter Boulevard
773-4753
Coordinator: Shawna Ohm

TRAFFIC UNIT

The Traffic Unit of the Police Department is responsible for a multitude of duties. The unit compiles traffic statistics, accident statistics, and numerous other data relating to the traffic situation in the city.

Cars moving too fast on your street? Nobody stopping at red lights on your corner? Want to bring these to our attention? Click on the link to Traffic Problems  or Call 874-8532 and tell us. We will respond.

The Traffic Unit also has an active role in traffic enforcement. The units four officers are involved in enforcing traffic laws in general and specific areas of the city. This unit is a supplement to the regular patrol units and is often used to impact on sporadic enforcement problems in specific neighborhoods. The officers in this unit are also involved in the investigation of all hit and run accidents and serious accidents including fatal accidents that occur in the city. The unit also is responsible for the maintenance and acquisition of the departments vehicle fleet. Officers duties also include the planning and execution of unusual events not specifically covered by Patrol. Such as, parades, emergency street closings, special police escorts, taxi and tow truck inspections, etc.

Accident reports are available to the public in Traffic for a $10.00 fee.

Citizens needing to have an accident report taken, where no officer was at the scene, must come into the Police Station to the Traffic Unit.

ISLAND SERVICES

Our Island Services Unit is a branch of the Community Affairs Division. This unit provides round the clock coverage of Peaks Island. The other islands are policed by part-time constables. In the event of an emergency officers can respond to these other islands in short time via the use of the Fire Department's fire boat or by U.S. Coast Guard boats.

Island Services Officers provide a variety of services. They are trained not only as police officers, but as firemen and emergency medical technicians. Officers assigned to Peaks Island have been engaged in Community Policing much longer than the rest of law enforcement. The officers work a 24 hour day, living side by side with residents and visitors, answering a wide variety of calls for service.

The Peaks Island Station can be reached at 874-8419
